“I want a B, I want a D, I want an S, I want an M! B.D.S.M!”
Many of you may have heard of BDSM. But do you really know what it is?
Concretely, BDSM is an acronym that refers to a set of sexual and erotic practices that involve elements of bondage (B&D), discipline (D&S), domination (D), submission (S) and masochism (M). Practicing BDSM doesn’t necessarily mean practicing each of these elements. For example, you may enjoy being tied up, but not enjoy masochism…
It is important to differentiate each of these practices, and not to make “dirty words” out of them: briefly we explain them to you:
#B. as in Bondage
It involves restricting a partner’s freedom of movement, often using ties, ropes, handcuffs, or similar means; and be careful not to confuse it with Shibari (further reading: Shibari and bondage: we explain their differences).
#D. for Discipline and/or Domination
The dominant partner exercises control, power or authority over the submissive partner. This may include orders, role-playing, or other forms of psychological domination.
#S. as in Submission and/or Sadism
The submissive partner agrees to obey the dominant partner’s directives. This may include accepting discipline, bondage or other forms of control.
#M. as in Masochism
Masochism involves the pleasure of experiencing pain, humiliation or other forms of suffering in a sexual or erotic context. It can be consensual and safely performed.
It’s important to note that BDSM practices are based on consent and open communication between partners. Rules and limits are negotiated in advance, and physical and emotional safety are paramount. BDSM should not be confused with violence or abuse…it is about activities between consenting adults who seek to explore their sexuality in a safe and fulfilling way.
Exploring these erotic and sexual desires can be a path of initiation. It involves a process of self-exploration, and exploration of your partner(s). It may even require a great deal of self-confidence-building. But if you’re open-minded, curious and, for some, patient, don’t hesitate… enjoy yourself! !
